Dear David,

It is extremely important that you, Sid and I have a chance to speak by
telephone as soon as possible. I am not sure which day you return home - or
if you have already done so - but I suspect you check your email frequently
based on past communication. Please let me a know a time that would be
available for you - or a couple of times - and Sid and I will confirm.
Thanks.

Regards,

David

Dear David,

It would be better if we could speak directly this week, preferably by the
end of Thursday. That would certainly be my first choice, as there is some
urgency to our conversation. If that is logistically impossible for you,
please let me know; if that is the case, my second choice would be to
communicate by email.

Thanks

David

It is a bit impossible to talk today.
I begin traveling in a few hours time - not having looked at my email for two
days.

Re: Message from Internet

Dear David,

I'm sorry we were not able to talk by telephone as I had suggested and thus
I am resorting to email as a second-choice alternative. I do so because it
is important that the contents of this letter reach you as quickly as
possible ( I will send a signed copy by courier ).

It is with regret that I am advising you that the Centre has decided to
withdraw its offer of a position as Clinical Director of the Mood and
Anxiety Disorders program. I know that you have considered this position
carefully and invested your time and energy into exploring this opportunity
at a personal, familial, and professional level. The decision we have made
to rescind the offer follows extensive discussion and consensus within the
Centre and the University.

Essentially, we believe that it is not a good fit between you and the role
as leader of an academic program in mood and anxiety disorders at the Centre
and in relation to the University. This view was solidified by your recent
appearance at the Centre in the context of an academic lecture. While you
are held in high regard as a scholar of the history of modern psychiatry, we
do not feel your approach is compatible with the goals for development of
the academic and clinical resource that we have.

You had indicated to me last week that you had not yet resigned your current
position and, in the light of our decision, that is a good thing. We do not
wish to compromise you with regard to your current employment.

This is a difficult piece of news to convey but we believe it is better to
do so now than after you and your family would have made the significant
upheaval of a move to Canada.

I am ready to speak with you further in person about this but given the
nature of our decision I felt it was extremely important to convey it to you
as quickly as possible.

Sincerely,

David

Re: Guidelines--Dunitz

Sid

The new situation is a very difficult one for you.
Whatever happens I appreciate all the work you've put in over the last two
years
to get things as far as they got.
What I'd like is, come what may
at least you and I can keep an open line of communication.

I'm still keen to float the guidelines passed Ruth Dunitz
I can't remember if you said you'd post me a set.
If you haven't please do.

Also on the Tuesday, Jack Fava came along
and we left the incomplete response symposium and paper as follows
- he and his crew would write a first draft.
Richard Tranter, the clinical lecturer here and I would add to it
I have some novel ideas and we have some data.
Re presentation, Richard would travel to the meeting and deliver the paper.

I checked this out with Richard before i got the DG email
and he's happy to run with it
- if you are

David

Re: Details

Don.

Before the email from DG came through, I had sorted out my work permit, while
travelling back through Toronto from giving the same lecture in Cornell that
you had just heard. Even though it would not seem to make a great deal of
sense to proceed with sorting out the rest of the bureaucratic details
surrounding any move, it seems to me to make sense for me to forward the work
permit to Caren Chu of CPSO. They also need input from the Royal College -
which I think is due to come to you (Baily Seto) this week. I can't see what
can be lost by continuing the paperwork.

In the meantime, its very hard to respond to the email from DG without knowing
exactly what the issues are. As the problems were outlined to me by Sid on
Thursday afternoon and DG at the meal on Thursday evening, these involved
difficulties primarily with the idea that Prozac can lead to suicide and an
implication that Lilly knew about the problem. Other issues mentioned included
megadose regimes and higher rates of service utilisation now.

If these are the issues, then there is something that I have to say about them
that you might want to hear. If you want to discuss things further, given the
time difference, its probably best if you call me some time during the week -
at home - [] in the evening my time, in the afternoon your time.
I will not be there on Wednesday however - I'll be in London at the invitation
of the Medicine's Control Agency to discuss the warnings on the SSRIs.

David

Re: RE: Details

David.

If you wish to discuss Dr. Goldbloom's letter, it would be best to do so
with him. Unless his position changes, I do not think there is any point in
pursuing details related to a move. I am sorry things have not worked out
but hopefully it will be for the best.

Don

David,
I don't think it is possible for me to correspond with you about the
job issue but I am
delighted to continue our links on these 2 projects and hopefully on other
matters.I appreciate your comments and deeply regret the turn of events.
